World Health Organization Issues Concern Over Severe Scarcity of Obesity Injections

Fewer than one in 10 people eligible to benefit from GLP-1 drugs including Wegovy are able to get them, caution the WHO as it releases its first advice on the drugs.

Given more than one billion people worldwide currently obese, it is urging broader and more equitable availability to these injectable treatments.

Based on projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidelines recognises that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong care," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are major barriers to universal availability to the injections that can assist patients in reducing substantial weight, notes the body.

Even under the present most optimistic scenario, the supply of GLP-1 therapies could only cover about 100 million people – under 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.

The recommendation urges nations and manufacturers to widen access, through approaches such as patent sharing.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the core ingredient of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is scheduled to end in a number of nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Injections Function

These medications imitate a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and enhance satiety so users consume fewer calories.

People usually see weight reduction after several weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Studies indicates patients may regain a significant portion within a year of stopping the medication, as their typical hunger return.

Being overweight or obese increases your likelihood for contracting medical conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some malignancies.

Excess weight affects people in every country and was responsible for millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
