The Compassion of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Assisted Me Secure the Job That Altered My Path

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Since my friend was interested in starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, sat down, and started talking to other diners.

Beside me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I told him that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I consider applying for a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that night. The engineering student approached me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off told my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a place where everything seems achievable – she declared: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in numerous aspects. I would never have had the courage or self-assurance to reach out at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a role in Europe where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
