A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country grappling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was attacked in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the 40-year-old presenter was accosted by a trio of assailants, one of whom began shooting at him before running away.

The motive of the attack remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, according to authorities.

How It Happened

Police indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was leaving a location close to the Carlton Centre.

He had spent several hours at the property supervising the setup of safety equipment, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, it was reported.

"The report indicates the victim was confronted by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," a police statement said.

Security camera video reportedly depicted a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what resembled a security uniform opening fire on Stock before running away.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was shot but fell down across the street.

It was further revealed that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the assault.

Crucial forensic evidence, like spent shells, were discovered at the location.

Appeal for Witnesses

Officials are asking eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.

"Our information indicates they traveled on foot after the shooting, and officers have been following their trail to establish their location," stated a police chief.

His family member, Nicole Stock, expressed the loved ones are reeling to come to terms with the loss.

"Words fail me. I cannot express the pain," were her words.
