Diane Ladd, Celebrated For Her Performance in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at 89 Years Old.

This award-nominated actress Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran passed away at the age of 89.

This actor, whose filmography spanned Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, left this world in her residence at her Ojai, California home. Her passing was shared in a statement shared by her daughter, Oscar-winning actor Laura Dern.

Laura Dern, who starred with her mother in several movies such as Wild at Heart, referred to her as “my amazing hero plus my precious gift being my mom”, noting that she was present as she died.

“She was the most wonderful mother, daughter, grandmother, performer, creative along with empathetic spirit that felt like a dream come true,” she expressed. “We were fortunate to know her. Her spirit soars with angels.”

Beginnings and Major Success

Her initial acting years saw minor parts in television programs including Gunsmoke whereas the seventies featured her performing next to the legendary Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.

During that year, 1974, she appeared with actress Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed comedy drama Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her acting landed Ladd her first Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category.

Later Decades

During the eighties, she was seen in crime thriller Black Widow, a suspense story as well as humorous film National Lampoon’s holiday comedy while also joining the show Alice, a sitcom derived from the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

In the subsequent decade, she earned another supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, a cult classic in which she portrayed the mom of her real-life daughter Dern’s character. The following year she received an additional nod for her role in Rambling Rose, another movie which included Laura Dern.

“This movie that Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she brought us to the UK for a royal premiere and an event dedicated to us,” Ladd recalled regarding Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, taking our hands, and crying, viewing our performance.”

That decade included parts in the comedy Cemetery Club, a film joining her again with Ellen Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a comedy about politics, starring John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne the movie Citizen Ruth where she acted as Laura Dern’s mom once more. Those years also saw her score Emmy nominations for work on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Partnerships with Her Daughter

She persisted in performing with her daughter in comedy drama the film Daddy and Them, Lynch’s Inland Empire, a surreal film and the series by Mike White satirical show the program Enlightened. She additionally starred next to Sandra Bullock in the film 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in that movie and Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.

Subsequent TV appearances included Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon.

Writing and Directing

She also authored and oversaw the humorous movie Mrs Munck that included herself and ex-husband Bruce Dern. “Bruce is a great actor,” she noted. “I was honored to direct him in a film. Indeed, I am the sole female in recorded history who directed her former husband. I humorously say: ‘I say ladies, if you want revenge, helm a movie with your ex.’ However, I’m joking.”

Family Ties

She was additionally a relative of playwright Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a great influence throughout my life”.

During 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with a respiratory illness and told she only had half a year left yet she recovered completely when her daughter shifted her to a new hospital.
